This verse is also woven into one of the most intimate Jewish moments, when parents bless their children at the sabbath dinner table with these words. It is a prayer for protection spoken over our loved ones.
 
The full verse:
יְבָרֶכְךָ ה׳ וְיִשְׁמְרֶךָ
May G-d bless you and protect you.
יָאֵר ה׳ פָּנָיו אֵלֶיךָ וִיחֻנֶּךָּ
May G-ds light face you and educate you.
יִשָּׂא ה׳ פָּנָיו אֵלֶיךָ וְיָשֵׂם לְךָ שָׁלוֹם
May G-ds face carry you and grant you peace.
 
Blessing alone is not enough if it cannot be held.
וישמרך means that what is given will also be guarded and protected.
Our sages explain that humans can give, but cannot always protect what they give,
while G-d both blesses and guards his blessings.
